Four Coach Trips Beyond the Capital, Ranked
Delphi, Meteora, the Argolis peninsula or the sunset cape? Four coach trips from the capital compared on fare, hours on the road and what you stand in front of.

The rule behind this list is simple: every trip must leave the city in the morning and bring you back the same evening, and each must end at something you cannot see from a car window. Goldenlark Excursions runs four excursions that clear both bars, and they suit very different travellers. Here is how they compare, with the two short-haul options last for anyone wary of long coach days.
Meteora, the fourteen hour day
The longest trip on the books and the one people remember longest. The coaches leave at 08:00 and thread north to a UNESCO-listed cluster of rock pillars crowned by working monasteries, a landscape that looks impossible in photographs and stranger in person. The fare drops to 69 EUR from a listed 99 EUR, and each monastery entry costs about 3 EUR on the spot. Bring patience for the drive and modest dress for the monasteries.
- Departure 08:00, return late evening, about 14 hours door to door.
- Fare 69 EUR, down from 99 EUR; monastery entries about 3 EUR each.
- What you get: rock formations, cliff caves and monastery interiors.
Delphi, the oracle and the museum

A 59 EUR fare buys ten hours and the most famous oracle of the ancient world, set on the slopes of Mount Parnassos. The coach rolls across the Boeotia plain while the guide covers the myths of Apollo and King Oedipus, then stops at the sanctuary, the Temple of Apollo and the museum holding the bronze Charioteer and the Naxian Sphinx. The day ends in Arachova, a mountain village of hand-woven carpets and Formaela cheese, before the drive home.
- Departure 08:20, about 10 hours, fare 59 EUR from a listed 64 EUR.
- Guide, whisper sets, Wi-Fi and taxes included; entry fees are not.
- Site and museum entry 12 EUR full, 6 EUR reduced.
Corinth Canal, Mycenae and Nafplio
The history-dense option. Nine hours and 59 EUR carry you to the canal cut through the isthmus in 1893, on to the Lion Gate and Cyclopean walls of Mycenae, and finally to Nafplio, a port of Venetian mansions that served as the first capital of the modern state. Of the three stops, Nafplio is the one travellers most often wish they had longer in, so plan lunch accordingly.
- Departure 08:45, about 9 hours, fare 59 EUR from a listed 64 EUR.
- Stops: canal footbridge, Mycenae site and museum, Nafplio old town.
- Entry fees for Mycenae are paid separately at 12 EUR full price.
Cape Sounion, timed to the light

The half-day choice and the cheapest of the four at 30 EUR. Departure follows the sun rather than a fixed clock, since the entire point is the Temple of Poseidon on its headland at golden hour, ringed on three sides by the Aegean. The coastal road out passes Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza, so the drive itself doubles as a Riviera tour. Roughly five hours round trip.
- About 5 hours, fare 30 EUR, departure set by the sunset.
- Site entry 10 EUR full, 5 EUR reduced.
- Best for: anyone with only a free afternoon.
Which one first?

| Trip | Fare | Length | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meteora | 69 EUR | 14 hours | A once-seen landscape and a long day on the road |
| Delphi | 59 EUR | 10 hours | Myth, museum pieces and a mountain village |
| Canal, Mycenae, Nafplio | 59 EUR | 9 hours | Three eras in one loop |
| Cape Sounion | 30 EUR | 5 hours | Sunset over the sea, low effort |
Start with Delphi. It teaches you how to read a sanctuary, which quietly improves every other site you will visit in the country, and it returns you at a survivable hour. Keep Sounion for the day your legs give out.
